Liberty Acquire Kelly Miller

Kelly MillerNEW YORK, NY – February 24, 2012 – The New York Liberty have acquired veteran guard Kelly Miller through free agency from the Washington Mystics. The announcement was made today by Head Coach and General Manager John Whisenant. Conditions of the contract were not released, per team policy.

Miller, in her 12th season out of the University of Georgia, was selected by Charlotte with the second overall pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Named co-winner of the WNBA’s 2004 Most Improved Player Award, she holds a .409 field-goal percentage averaging 7.2 points and 2.6 assists over her career.

“Kelly is a veteran point guard that can also shoot and play off guard position. This frees up Cappie to do what she does best, ‘shoot and score’ and not have to worry about point guard duties,” said Whisenant. “She is tough and athletic and will fit our hard-nosed defensive style very well. Leilani and Kelly make us very stable at this very important position.”

As a former James E. Sullivan award winner, an honor given to the nation’s top amateur athlete, Miller had a record setting career at the University of Georgia. Miller finished her collegiate career as UGA’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,177 points and second all-time in assist with 639. In the 2011 season, she averaged 7.4 points and 2.8 assists in 34 games for the Mystics.

“I’m really excited to be part of the New York Liberty! I’m looking forward to playing for Coach Whisenant and with a great group of talented players. I’m thankful for this opportunity and can’t wait for the season to start,” Miller said.

Liberty fans will be able to watch the team in action at the regular season home-opener against the Connecticut Sun at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday, May 19 at 4pm. Season tickets and partial plans are still available for purchase by calling 212-465-6766 or by visiting NYLiberty.com.

The Liberty will call Prudential Center home for the second of three seasons in 2012 while Madison Square Garden continues its historic, top-to-bottom Transformation. Prudential Center is a convenient 15 minutes away from The Garden by train.
