Connecticut Signs Veteran Mistie Mims

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (February 6, 2012) — The Connecticut Sun announced today it has signed free agent Mistie Mims to a two-year contract.

Terms were not disclosed.

Mistie MimsMims – formerly Mistie Bass – is a 6-foot-3 forward who appeared in 120 games over five seasons with both the Houston Comets and Chicago Sky. Selected out of Duke with the 21st overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft, Mims is expected to be the complementary front-court role player Jessica Moore became during the 2011 season. Moore, now a free agent, recently had an arthroscopic procedure on her left knee and is in rehabilitation.

“We were in the free agent market because we’re not sure Jessica Moore is going to be able to play at the beginning of the season,” Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault said. “Mistie is somebody we have been looking at for a couple of years. She can play both post positions. She fits into our style. She’s a post player who can run the floor. She’s a good offensive rebounder and a good defender in our defensive scheme, particularly against the posts we have to face in our conference. She will be able to play with either Tina (Charles) or Asjha (Jones) and complement them.”

Mims did not play in the WNBA during the 2011 season, but she is currently averaging a league-high 19.7 points per game for Challes-Les-Eaux in the French League. Playing for the same team in 2010-11, Mims was the MVP among foreign players, averaging 19.1 points and 9.2 rebounds.

“She is a high, high energy player, and I think she will fit in great with the personalities on our team,” Thibault said. “The chemistry will be terrific with her.”

The Sun will open their 10th season on May 19th at New York, and will return home to host the Liberty the next day at Mohegan Sun Arena at 5 p.m.
